Standing in the queue in the mess hall, I found that everyone talked with everyone.
And so I met Lucy who was from Coragulac and we had tea two nights in a row. Having lived in Colac for some many years, we had a few laughs about local places. Lucy explained that rakehoes were huge manual rakes that could be turned over and used as a hoe. She explained that the crews raked the mineral (the dirt) on the fireground. They did this when the dozers cannot get in. She worked in the staging area which used the footy rooms and the footy grounds in Corryong. This was where the dozers, skidders and trucks were stored each evening. The equipment man would check fuel in each machine each night.
