People from all parts of Victoria worked together.
The mess hall was another part of the battle plan to control the fires. CFA crews, just off their long shifts, would remove some of their protective gear and just stretch out on the grassy area around the mess hall. These two ham radio operators, Keith and Gregg, helped in the CFA and WICEN. Keith, the CFA man on the left, saw Gregg's WICEN insignia and introduced himself as a ham radio operator. The men who managed the food preparation came from Horsham and we knew people in common including one ham, VK3DTO. One of the guys spoke Russian and we chatted also. They served 500 people each day. |
