A quiet fire is one which laps along and burns.
We learned about control lines where the skidders and dozers (D9s) were. One control line was 4 dozers wide. The fire was so fierce that it jumped this control line. These spottoes (spotovers) could reach great heights. Strike teams often had COWS (communications on wheels) with them. They drove pigs aka slipons which were small tankers that carried the water needed for the firefighting. The containers were expandable. Here a Commander on night shift is reviewing notes, maps and reports. One day, the DivCom received information from a satellite photo. It showed a hotspot on a ridge which had been burned already. Stags are burning trees. Some of these stags burned for days. It was our job to pass messages to the sector commander to check these areas once again. |
